Winter Home Maintenance Checklist Every Homeowner Should Follow

Cold weather can bring pretty scenery, but with that also comes its ability to wreak havoc on your home if not properly protected.
Cold weather can bring pretty scenery, but with that also comes its ability to wreak havoc on your home if not properly protected.

Winter puts unique stress on a home’s systems. Preparing early helps prevent leaks, frozen pipes, and costly surprises. Here’s a practical winter home maintenance checklist that homeowners should complete each year to protect their property and stay ahead of seasonal wear. Be sure to download the free checklist at the bottom of the page.

1. Clean and Extend Downspouts

Keep water flowing safely away from the foundation by ensuring downspouts are clear and extended at least six feet from the home. Proper drainage helps prevent basement moisture and soil erosion.

2. Seal Exterior Gaps

Check around siding, trim, windows, and utility penetrations for cracks or gaps. These openings allow cold air, moisture, and pests to enter. A simple bead of caulk can make a big difference in comfort and energy efficiency.

3. Service the Furnace

Schedule an annual HVAC tune-up before temperatures drop. A well-maintained furnace runs more efficiently, lasts longer, and reduces the risk of sudden breakdowns during the coldest part of winter.

4. Check Attic Insulation

Insufficient or uneven insulation leads to heat loss, higher energy bills, and ice dams on the roof. Inspect your attic to ensure insulation is properly installed and meets recommended depth guidelines.

5. Inspect Weatherstripping

Drafty doors and windows can dramatically affect comfort and heating costs. Replace worn or damaged weatherstripping to keep cold air out and warm air in.

6. Protect Outdoor Spigots

Drain garden hoses and detach them from exterior faucets. Add insulated faucet covers to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting during extreme cold.

7. Test Smoke and CO Detectors

Winter increases the use of heating systems, fireplaces, and appliances that can create combustion byproducts. Test all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, replace batteries, and update outdated units.

8. Examine Gutters for Ice Risk

Clean gutters of leaves and debris so melting snow can drain freely. Clogged gutters trap water, leading to ice buildup, roof leaks, and structural issues.
